Superphone Phonecards

This gallery contains phonecards produced by Superphone, a company which was based on the Old Airport Road, Cloghran, County Dublin. The first Superphone phonecards were made in England, and used a magnetic strip to store the cards unit data. The cards which were produced in the UK, were encoded by Superphone in Dublin.

Superphones cardphone system was a Motorola 68CCX car phone, which used the Eircell 088 phone network to operate. The flexibility meant Superphone card phones were installed at awkward loctions such as coaches and boats.

The Superphone magnetic phonecards were extremely flimsy, with a tickness value of just 0.26mm. this made the cards highly susceptible to damage.

In 1994, Superphone introduced their first chipped based Phonecard, manufactured by Gemplus.
